Hello my name is Samuel Scarlett. Throughout this semester I will be creating blog posts similar to this one in an attempt to create a line of inquiry formed around a specific topic. I hope to make these posts as interesting as possible and allow readers to understand the importance of the issue I choose to write about. Welcome to my blog.
I am currently 18 years old, and I am from Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Most people have never heard of this small town, and this transition to college has been major due to the size of the campus and the amount of people I encounter on a daily basis. I am definitely what most would consider a movie junkie; among some of my favorites are Star Wars, the Breakfast Club, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter, Blow, and the list goes on. I always enjoy travelling to the mountains to go hiking and "Enoing" with my brother and girlfriend (an ENO is a hammock for those of you who aren't aware). Before moving to UNC Charlotte, I bought and sold cars as a job and a hobby. At the age of 16 a friend and I began buying, selling, repairing, and detailing used cars; this experience furthered my interest in the field of business, and this is the primary reason that I chose this institution. I am enrolled in the Belk College of Business as a Pre-Accounting major, and although this could possibly change, I am positive that I want to pursue a degree within this college.
The writing situation I am being presented with throughout this semester is that of a research-based assignment. I will be expected to produce a topic of interest, based around media, and create a line of inquiry in regards to that topic. The purpose of this writing situation is to enhance my inquiry and research skills while discovering and delivering information of value about the topic I choose to write about. There will be a clear thread of my thoughts and research throughout the blog posts that I create during the semester, and this will allow me to revisit and reassess the information that I have presented.
I have never truly been taught the basic skills of inquiry or the research skills necessary to create a foundation for this process. Throughout the 13 years of my education prior to college, I was always told not to ask stupid questions. I believe that this statement is absolutely ridiculous because it scares students into not asking questions at all, and this lack of questioning is what creates poor inquiry skills. While creating this portfolio, I hope to develop better inquiry skills, specifically the ability to question certain aspects of a problem or situation. I wish to heighten my ability to research a topic beyond that of simply stating the obvious or summarizing what others have already introduced to the issue. Overall, I desire to not only develop these skills, but I desire to use these skills in my daily life after this course comes to an end.
